Named for its heavily warted face, the warthog has a charcoal gray coat sparsely covered with straggly long hairs and a distinctive mane down its back. With its two pairs of canine tusks protruding from the mouth - one pair pointing down and the other curved up - the warthog is well equipped to defend itself against a wide range of predators. They also use their tusks to dig food from the ground for its [G 34 / omnivorous] diet. Like its relative the domestic pig, it likes to wallow in mud. When disturbed, warthogs will run with their tails held erect. The population in the ecosystem is estimated at 10,000.
